August 24, Kobe Bryant Day

by 낡고 이른 2025. 8. 24.

Kobe Bryant Day on August 24 was first officially recognized as a regional holiday by Los Angeles in 2016. The date combines the jersey numbers 8 and 24 that Kobe wore during his 20-year career with the Lakers (with his birthday falling on August 23), and was established by a city council resolution to honor both his career and his contributions to the community.

After his tragic death in a helicopter accident in January 2020, Orange County also adopted August 24 as Kobe Bryant Day, solidifying the tradition of commemorating the day throughout Southern California.

At the federal level, in 2021, the U.S. House of Representatives introduced Resolution H.Res.562 to symbolically recognize August 24 as Kobe Bryant Day. While not a national holiday, the observance expanded from local recognition to a broader narrative of national remembrance.

In August 2020, during the playoffs after his passing, the Lakers wore the “Black Mamba” uniforms. In the first quarter, the score notably reached 24–8, creating a symbolic moment. Players and fans recalled feeling as though “he was with them,” and the continued use of the Black Mamba uniforms through the Finals reaffirmed Kobe’s “Mamba Mentality” (competitive spirit and dedication) as a central part of the team’s identity.

Every year around August 24, purple and gold lighting displays are common. The Santa Monica Pier Ferris wheel illuminated in purple and gold has become an iconic sight. Hundreds of Kobe murals across L.A. also resurface on social media on this day.

Since 2020, Nike has hosted “Mamba Week” from August 23 (his birthday) through August 24, re-releasing Kobe collections, sharing tribute content, and linking proceeds to foundation donations. Fans share their stories with hashtags #MambaDay and #KobeDay, and many events also tie in fundraising for local youth sports programs.
