SAIL Amsterdam is the world’s largest tall ships festival, held every five years in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
It began in 1975 as part of the celebrations marking the 700th anniversary of Amsterdam’s founding. Its overwhelming popularity soon made it a recurring event every five years.

The highlight of the festival is the SAIL-in Parade, where dozens of historic tall ships, modern training vessels, naval ships, and yachts from around the world sail into Amsterdam’s IJ River and harbor. The sight of hundreds of ships of all sizes filling the harbor is truly spectacular.

During the festival, the entire port of Amsterdam transforms into a massive celebration venue. Visitors can enjoy onboard concerts, maritime history exhibitions, educational programs, and dazzling fireworks displays every night — creating unforgettable experiences.
With over 2 million visitors and hundreds of ships participating each edition, it is considered the largest tourism event in the Netherlands.

SAIL Amsterdam is more than just a maritime festival; it commemorates the Netherlands’ proud seafaring history and maritime trade traditions that defined its 17th-century Golden Age. The event not only reflects national pride in its global naval heritage but also serves as a cultural bridge between past and present, as tall ships sail gracefully alongside Amsterdam’s iconic canals.
The 2020 edition was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but this year (August 20–24), the festival returns after a decade-long hiatus.
