Causes and Treatment of Nosebleeds

by 낡고 이른 2025. 8. 8.

Nosebleeds often occur when the body is tired and under stress. There are medical reasons behind this.

Although the sight of a nosebleed can be alarming, it is usually not a sign of a serious illness. According to the medical community, it is a complex response of the body to fatigue.

First, let’s consider why and where nosebleeds occur.

The inside of our nose is covered with a thin, moist layer called the mucosa. This mucosa contains a web of fine blood vessels that help regulate the temperature and humidity of the air we breathe.

Especially, in the front cartilage area of the nostrils, known as Kiesselbach's plexus, multiple blood vessels converge and form a shallow network. Because these vessels are very fine and easily exposed to external irritation, over 90% of nosebleeds originate here.

So how does fatigue cause bleeding in this vulnerable area?

One of the primary causes is an increase in blood pressure and vascular pressure.

When our body is fatigued or stressed, it releases stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline to cope. These hormones temporarily raise blood pressure and accelerate heart rate.

This elevated blood pressure exerts direct pressure on the fine vessels of the nasal mucosa. If the vessels are weakened, they can rupture, causing a nosebleed.

Inflammatory responses and mucosal weakening also contribute to nosebleeds.

Accumulated overwork and stress can lead to a chronic inflammatory state in the body. This response dries and thins the nasal mucosa, weakening its ability to protect the blood vessels.

When the mucosa is weakened, even small changes in blood pressure or light stimulation can easily damage the vessels, leading to bleeding.

Fatigue also disrupts the balance of the autonomic nervous system, which controls bodily functions. In particular, the sympathetic nervous system becomes overactive, affecting blood vessel contraction and relaxation, making them unstable.

Unexpectedly, unconscious habits can also trigger nosebleeds.

When tired, we tend to touch or rub our face and nose more frequently. If physical stimulation is added on top of already pressurized vessels and weakened mucosa, the vessels in Kiesselbach’s area can easily burst.

Some people tilt their head back during a nosebleed, but the proper response is to lean slightly forward and pinch the soft part of the nose (nostrils) with the thumb and index finger for 5–10 minutes.

At the same time, breathe slowly through your mouth, avoid speaking, and apply a cold compress around the nose.

Above all, the best way to prevent nosebleeds is to relieve fatigue through enough rest and sleep.

It's also important to keep indoor air from becoming too dry by using a humidifier to maintain 50–60% humidity, and to avoid nose-picking or blowing too hard.

If the nosebleed lasts more than 20 minutes, recurs frequently, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as dizziness or bruising, you should visit an ENT specialist for a proper diagnosis.
