The Fastest and Slowest Dog Breeds

by 낡고 이른 2025. 8. 3.

A dog’s running speed depends on its physical structure—long legs, deep chest (with large heart and lungs), and flexible spine. Each breed's unique traits and selective breeding purposes also result in significant differences in speed.

Level 1: Elite Speed Group (Top speed: 65–72 km/h) – Highway speed

American Kennel Club(www.akc.org)

Representative breed: Greyhound

Often considered the fastest land animal after the cheetah, the Greyhound is the “F1 car” of dogs. Its deep chest and flexible spine allow for a unique running gait called the “double suspension gallop,” enabling explosive speed. This breed was quite literally born to run.

Level 2: Top Sprinter Group (Top speed: 55–65 km/h) – Olympic sprinter pace

American Kennel Club(www.akc.org)

Representative breeds: Saluki, Afghan Hound, Weimaraner

These dogs are mostly sighthounds or fast hunters. The Saluki combines incredible speed with exceptional endurance. The Afghan Hound, once a royal hunting dog in ancient Egypt, is both graceful and swift.

Level 3: Agile Pursuer Group (Top speed: 45–55 km/h) – Comparable to urban speed limits

American Kennel Club(www.akc.org)

Representative breeds: Border Collie, German Shepherd, Doberman Pinscher

Intelligent and athletic working dogs bred for herding or policing. While their top speed is slightly lower, they excel at acceleration and quick direction changes.

Level 4: Active Average Group (Top speed: 35–45 km/h) – Faster than a human sprint

American Kennel Club(www.akc.org)

Representative breeds: Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, Standard Poodle

Popular large breeds bred for retrieving or swimming. While not sprinters, they possess strong stamina and respectable running speed.

Level 5: Leisurely Walker Group (Top speed: 20–30 km/h) – Around cycling pace

American Kennel Club(www.akc.org)

Representative breeds: Welsh Corgi, Dachshund, Beagle

Short-legged or scent-oriented breeds. They may be slower overall but can move quickly over short distances.

Level 6: Relaxed and Charming Group (Top speed: 10–15 km/h) – Brisk walking or light jogging

American Kennel Club(www.akc.org)

Representative breeds: Shih Tzu, Pug, Bulldog

Brachycephalic dogs with flat faces that hinder breathing. Their bodies are not built for running and should not be pushed to do so.
